Slag heap in Clarkdale, Arizona

The 2-block grassy rectangle in the middle of Clarkdale was packed with bluegrass fans last Saturday evening. The Burnett family singers provided the entertainment in the bandstand. Bass, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, and acoustic guitar pickin’  and country singing bounced off the foothills into the ears of a mostly senior crowd. It was fun to watch little girls rev up incurable energy bouncing, jumping and clogging to the music. Middle-schoolers flirted, shyly approached and retreated potential first loves, and a few brave middle-aged souls two-stepped across the concrete sidewalk-turned-dancehall. A cool breeze drifted through the park, and zero mosquitoes came calling. Some would say this was a picture of a perfect summer evening.
